A visit to the Millstone Cafe in Malvern

I recently heard about the opening of a new cafe in Malvern, it sounded like it would be exactly my kind of place. Settled a bit off the main roads, a place that serves breakfast but also delicious cakes as the owners, Alice Wright, is a trained pâtissière.

My hope was that since the cafe was still quite new, that it wouldn’t be as packed as some other great breakfast places in Melbourne. When we arrived on a Saturday morning at around 11 there were quite a few people waiting outside for their take-away coffees that were handed to them through a big window. Through the same window you could also already see the cakes, croissants and doughnuts that simply looked mouthwatering.

A lovely waitress came outside to take our name for the waiting list to get a table inside and we ordered coffee for while we were waiting. We only had to wait a few minutes and were then led to our seats.

The whole cafe had a great feel to it, smaller tables at the side but also bigger, communal tables, high ceilings, white washed brick walls and a big window front which made the place bright and light. I loved the food related prints on the wall and the specials board, which was written on brown paper, that was hanging off a big roll mounted to the wall next to the counter.
We ordered Ricotta Hotcakes and a Breakfast Roll, it took a while until they came, but the wait was well worth it! My hotcakes were served with Mascarpone, homemade honeycomb and edible flowers/ micro herbs. They were light and fluffy and absolutely delicious.
Mr L had the breakfast roll that consisted of a fried egg, crispy bacon, baby spinach and chipotle mayonnaise all in a toasted brioche bun. It looked quite heavy but actually wasn’t, the mayo maybe could’ve used a little bit more chipotle (but that’s personal taste) but apart from that it was exactly as expected, the bacon was perfectly crispy and the egg yolk was waxy.
We had spotted a drink on the menu called Espresso Almond Milk that is available on weekends only. We decided to order that as the mixture of almonds, espresso, dates, filtered water, sea salt and vanilla bean sounded rather delicious. It arrived in a mini milk bottle with a straw and was even better than expected, I only got a few sips before Mr L finished it.
When we went up to the counter to pay we couldn’t leave without selected a mini cake to take home for afternoon tea. (We chose the flourless orange cake and it was awesome!)
Overall I think the Millstone is a great place for breakfast, the service was very friendly, maybe the food and coffee took a bit longer than usual but it was worth the wait and I will definitely be back. There are still other things on the menu I want to try like the baked eggs and the avo smash.
I can only recommend the Millstone, well done to Alice and her staff!
